No sounds in FC4
I just installed FC4 onto my computer. I it detects my sound card and plays sound from the detection window. But no applications can play sounds. I have a Creative SB Audigy, and it is using the snd-emu10k1 module which seems to work from the Audio Devices Detection window when you tell it to play a test sound. I have check alasmixer and nothing is muted. Is there anything else i need to check?
Thanks for the help

i don't have fc installed right now but if i remember you need to tell the windowmanger to play sounds after it starts the sound server.
in gnome it is under: Desktop : Preferences: Sounds.
in kde it is in kcontrol : sound and multimedia.
in there you can test for sound, turn on the sound server and select the hardware settings (usually 'autodetect' is best).
then 'test' again to make sure the sound server is working (it will normally start when you boot up from now on).
then (in kde still) you need to go to 'system notification' which is just below 'sound system' on the main menu and select the sound package you want (usually you'll want 'kde notifications' since it covers most of the sound events that you'd want.
choose 'turn on all sounds' and 'apply to all apps', then 'apply'.
good luck.

I just re-installed FC4 on my computer (harddrive went TU). And this time i installed KDE instead of Gnome. I again do not have any sound in Linux, and I tried the same fix from above and it doesn't seem to work. Is there anything else to look at?

fll and jben,
no sound at all? even with the tests??
did you try the different servers (ie. in kde, arts is *usually* the one that will work with most kde apps), and either alsa or oss should work in gnome.
sound is left off in linux for reason (don't ask me why), but apparently because of these miriad of choices.
each sound server is different and usually handles something specific or 'better' than others.
for instance, once you get your basic sound going, mis & i think poly sound are good for networking sounds.
also remember you need to (many times, but necessarily) tell individual programs (like xine) about the particular sound server you are using.
ahhnd.. arts has a habbit of NOT given up the daemon after it is done...so there is a little switch you can use to tell it to do so, say after 1 or 2 seconds.. this way other programs that dont' use arts can utilize the sound device (ie. /dev/dsp.. etc).

Halvy,
Yeah i don't have sound even in when testing from the Control Center in KDE. I have checked alsamixer and it doesn't look like anything is muted. It looks like arts is installed but i don't know how to tell if it has the deamon hold up.

well i'd start with the basics then..
- assure sound card/speakers are woring (use knoppix or whatever to do this).
- run alsaconf to set up your soundcard/drivers.
- verify your install is indeed 'ok' and check the fc boards for similar prols.

Finally figured it out. The sound card that I have is the SB Audigy. It has a digital or analog out for a 5.1 surrond sound system which i don't have hooked up but there is a switch (that i found in Kmix) that tells it to use the digital out instead of the analog out. I final found that and it looks to have defaulted to use the digital out which is odd, but anyway i turned that off and i know of sound. WOOT.
Under KMix there is a tab called "Switches" in there was one labeled "Audigy Analog\Digial Output Jack" Make sure that one is off.
Hope that might help somepeople took me two days to find it.
Thanks for the debug help Halvy it lead me to finding that switch.
