I have a similar setup, and spent a solid day getting the sound to work. The solution is quite simple:
in /etc/modprobe.conf
add:
options snd-via82xx dxs_support=4 ac97_quirk=1
and reboot.
The K7VTA3 v8C with the VT8235 chipset and the VIA VT1612A 2-channel audio CODEC driver is identified by the Fedora Core 2 install process, and so the driver should already be in modprobe.conf:
alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
install snd-via82xx /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-via82xx && /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-via82xx { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-via82xx
The ac97quirk=1 option is what fixes the problem, which is that the headphone and master volume lines are reversed from what alsa expects. You can see this yourself prior to the above fix by running alsamixer and unmuting one of the muted lines and bringing up the volume while playing a sound file. Voila - music, even when the "Master" volume is set to mute.
Hope this saves someone a few hours frustration (or the cost of a new sound card).
