No sound in TVTime
 

I cannot get any sound when using TVTime. My distro is FC4, but it is an ancient problem with FC3, FC2 and xawtv also.
I can listen CD and DVD, but not TV.
The audio card, AC97, is included in the motherboard.
The TV card is AverTV Studio.
WindowsXP is installed in the same HD and has no sound problems with the TV.
I should like to solve it definitively.
If I must get some information from FC4, please tell me how to do it.

for the short while i had a working TV card in order to get sound working i went to my local radio shack and bought a jumper that went from audio out on the TV card to audio in on my sound card...

i think my TV card died because it did not like being in a computer that is on 24/7/365

I think the problem is not a matter of conexions, as I can see and listen the TV in the same computer but with WindowsXP.

Ten days ago I wrote that I get no sound in the programs to see TV (xawtv, tvtime).

As there is no solving answer I insist in order to don't forget the question. I am very interested to solve it

i had the same problem long back. it turned out that it wasnt being detected properly. mine is pixeltv pro but it was being detected as pinnacle.

i had to over ride the defaults

I have had the same problem every time I build a new system (usually about 6 times a year). It may be that you need a cable between the output on the TV card, and the line in on your PC (irrespective of whether it needs it in Windows), the alternative is that your card is not detected/setup properly - can you tune channels in? Finally, the option that usually gets me - check your volume control mixer settings. Mine seems to default to muting things, so sound on my TV card disappears when yum does it's worst.

The cable between the sound output of TV Card and the Line in of the PC is installed. The channels are well tuned and all the settings are unmuted. But no sound is listened. Only a very loud background noise if volume is maximum.

I have not found a driver of my TVCard Avermedia AverTV Studio for Linux. Maybe this is the problem. Where can I see the supported TVCards in FC4? Can I test my TV Card with another drivers? How?

Its gotta be your mixer settings. If you're running GNOME, double-click speaker icon (upper right corner), click capture tab, then make sure line-in is unmuted (tiny speaker icon, bottom of window.)

I am running GNOME. The line-in in capture tab is unmuted. I see TV images but without sound.

In TVTime with a TV Channel tunned, I have conected the earphones to the TV Card sound output and I don't get any sound. If I do the same in Windows with another TV tunner program, I listen the TV sound in the earphones.

Any idea about which is the problem?

Try going into the mixer, and verifying that the input channel that you've got the audio output cable plugged into is enabled and the volume turned up.

For example - on my system the output cable loops from the sound output of the WinTV card to the Line input of my computer. I have to go into (in my case - KDE) KMix, go to the Input tab, and enable the Line input.

Also - in earlier versions of Kmix (prior to 3.4, I think), Kmix would NOT remember the settings and would disable the Line Input. So I'd have to go back and enable it everytime I wanted to watch TV. Thankfully that problem was resolved with KDE 3.4.x

THANK GOD SOMEBODY ELSE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. Ive been trying to figure this out for the past couple days with no success. My problem is almost identical. Im running Fedora 3 with an Advantek tv tuner card and an onboard via sound card.
It works flawlessly in Windows; line out and line in for the sound card working, line out for the TV card working, no problems. I can watch and hear TV in windows so I know the card doesnt have a problem.
When I go to Fedora with the same connections (line out of the tv card to the line in of the sound card) I get no sound. I unmute everything including the line in volume in the alsa mixer. Still nothing. So Im thinking maybe the TV card is outputing sound but the sound card cant hear it. So I connect my headphone to the line out of the TV card. Nothing. Then I connected my mp3 player to the line in of the sound card. Still nothing.
So Im screwed both ways. Now Im trying to figure out a way of testing the line in of the sound card by piping a music file to that device. I dont even know if thats practically possible.

make sure you have proper sound drivers loaded for via sound card.
next make sure that you have proper version oc driver for tv card
next try reboot if all check out.
if this dont work i would have to advice that the tv card turner drivers are flawed or not 100% compatible with the version of tv tuner card you must have.

I think you need to check the BTTV card list, and add the correct card id for your card.

Mine is a pixelview card, so my modprobe.conf says

alias char-major-81 bttv
options bttv card=70

The card list is somewhere on your machine in a doc section, but as I recall you can also find it at the bttv website.

Those were good tests. Seems like both your audio card driver and TV tuner configs are screwy. For BTTV you'll have to lookup and config the tuner type manually, as drjimstuckinwin suggested. But until you get line-in working it's not going to matter much. ;) I'd start by fixing your sound card driver/mixer problem FWIW.
