Unhappy No sound from Creative Labs SB Audigy

Help, I'm a newbee.

I have a Dell 8400, installed an additionally drive and created a dual boot with XP and Fedora 4. Everything went fine until it asked to test the sound.
I have no sound.... I have an Audigy SB sound card from Creative.

I have installed alsa but don't know what to do. I'm not sure how to run alsaconf or if it exists....

Here is the output of lspci:

Perhaps the most obvious question is whether you have checked that your sound is working properly under XP. If it is then you probably do not have a hardware problem, and vice-versa. I'll assume for the present purposes that you have done that check.

Your lspci and lsmod outputs look fairly encouraging. You have got:
04:02.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 04)
as one of the lines from lspci. Also:
snd_emu10k1 133317 4 snd_emu10k1_synth
is there in the lsmod.
emu10k1 is listed on the alsa soundcard matrix as the right driver for the audigy. However there is a risk that yours is some strange audigy variant with an unusual chip. You may be able to get more information about it via
lspci -v
which puts lspci into verbose mode.

The main point of alsaconf is to match up a sound device with the right drivers for your distribution. It generates some output that can be put in your modules configuration file to ensure that the drivers are loaded as soon as they are required. However it looks as though that side of things has already been attended to - because the output you have sent seems to show the right drivers for your audigy. I think you should try to make quite sure by identifying the chip in your audigy, and you may be able to do that with lspci -v.

Now let's suppose that you have the right kernel module for the chip on your sound card. Even that by itself is not quite sufficient - unfortunately your chip might have been given a signal along the lines of "keep quiet, we don't want any noise coming from you" when the driver was loaded. So really you should try gaining control of the output. Probably the best device control comes from the alsa programs themselves. You say that you have got alsa installed. If so then things like alsamixer should be available You can run alsamixer from a simple terminal. The graphical side is rather crude, but it gives very direct control. You can find out how to use it via
man alsamixer
You can get a sound output device listing via
aplay -l
which should tell you what devices appear to be available to alsa.
Again instructions for using that can be found via
man aplay

When you run alsamixer there are command line switches to identify the particular output device you want to control. If there is more than one such sound device it may be necessary to identify it to alsamixer.

It is quite probable that your output device is currently muted. I think that you can use the m key to either mute or unmute different channels, which are selected in alsamixer using the arrow keys. It is very easy to mess up a configuration when nothing is actually wrong at all - its just that the volume is turned down or the output channel is muted.

Many Thanks!

I really appreciate your reply!
It was the dreaded "mute".

Thanks for everything!
