no more volume control?

Going on with my first ever linux installation: Fedora Core 3 64bit. After deleting all user accounts nautilus and the desktop and file features were working again. EXCEPT I got a message saying the the vloume control was not working and then a question to delete something (??) related to this. As a result, the volume control has disappeared from the top panel (along with the up2date alert icon), and the volume control from the application menu is also not working any longer.

How can this be fixed?

Right click on the panel where they used to be, select add applet -> volume control. For the Redhat alert applet, you just have to run the program from you menu (its under system) and the applet will be docked in your panel.

Thanks, unfortunately the control isn't running from the menu either.

Error messages that appear are like:

"The panel has encountered a problem while loading OAFIID:
GNOME_MixerApplet"
Details: unknown CORBA exception ID:
' IDL: omg.org/CORBA/COMMON-FALURE1.0'

The message is followed by the question:
Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?

I did a Google and found some references, but no fix
