So, I guess my point is, don't knock yourself out getting those SRPMs set up for FC9, if I'm the only jackass who needs them.
Well, then I'm glad I haven't knocked myself out here....

Unfortunately, a unexpexted hardware failure has crippled me here temporarily, and delayed my response, so sorry about the delay, but I'm working on it....

First, that's not sleep mode, or CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE would not help, that's X11 trying to restart, second, it just might help if you try startx, gdm, and init 5 until you get an error screen, which after going through the options just might take you into a weird resolution you can reconfigure your monitor with, and if this fails, that's a pretty good looking server! The reason X won't start is that macs have rather weird graphics configs, my eMac especially. Ubuntu 9.04 detected and worked on my eMac with a buch of gnome-panel errors, but I just readded the applets manually and all is well. They DO make ubuntu 9.04 for PPC, they just don't officially support it, and I can see why. Crawling with bugs, gives me a authenication error every time I become root, and continues.
Linux was optimized for x86 based machines, not PPC, and because of this you have some issues. If this is our first experience with tuxey, try it on an x86 PC.

EDIT: I got fedora 10 to run via net install!!!
Using it now, no errors.

First off, gee, thanks for the info, 13 months after i needed it.

I didn't mean my computer literally went into sleep mode...its behavior is similar to what happens when my computer goes into sleep mode: y'know, glowing power button, screen off.

Yeah, tried that numerous times; it went into the euphemistic "sleep" mode, and had to be recovered to the CLI with CTRL-ALT-BKSP.

    ...gdm,...
It's my understanding that GDM requires Gnome in order to run, in which case, well, Gnome won't run unless it can find a running XServer, which I didn't have, heh, heh, heh...

Well, the computer was already set to runlevel 5 (multi-user graphical mode), and was already trying start the XServer.

    Tell me about it!

As you might have noticed by reading the entire thread, this problem has been mostly resolved, as I discovered that X11 for iMacs (i don't know about eMacs -- different animal) requires a single line of code in the xorg.conf file relating to the (very specific!) horizontal and vertical refresh rates of the built-in monitor.

Well, OK, I really didn't start out to be contarian, but allow me to pick some nits. First, Linus Torvald, the guy who maintains (and actually first developed!) the Linux kernel, is allegedly a big fan of the IBM/Apple/Motorolla chipset known as PPC, and makes sure that new kernel releases maintain compatibility with the PPC architecture. (that's what I heard; the person who told me that might just be insane, though). Second, of course, yes, MOST major distributions are targeted at the Intel PCs, but there are still some releases that are targeted ONLY at PPCs (YellowDog Linux, for one, which i am quite familiar with), and Fedora/Debian still have releases compatible with the PPC. So, yes, while most Linux flavors are not maximized for my particular model of computer...

Well, and what would be the fun in THAT?

I'm very happy that you have Fedora 10 working on an eMac. As the eMac has a processor speed (depending on the model) of btwn 0.8 and 1.42 GHz, this isn't surprising; my old iMac, however, running at 0.333 GHz, is not up to the task of running Fedora 9 with anything other than an infuriating degree of sluggishness. Which, by the way, is why I haven't tried to install FC10.

Um, ok, sure. And if God were human, he'd be Steve Jobs, right?

Anyway, thanx for you post, I suppose.
