Question NEWBIE FC 5 Xserver can't detect mouse pointer?

Hi guys, I just installed FC5 on my laptop (Aspire 3613) from what was my old FC1 partition (which I also installed from a book recently, I also duel boot winxp and FC).

Before the installation I checked all my discs and everything came up ok. I choose the upgrade option and about two hours later, it installed.

When I run my FC it flashes between a black terminal screen and the boot up a distorted Acer screen. When I get the chance to log in, it says something like " Failed to start the Xserver (your GUI) can't find your pointer (your mouse) would you like X server to diagnose the problem?"

When it shows the diagnosis it shows the following:
Code:
(ee) Xf86OpenSerial can not open device /dev/psaux No such file or directory
(ee) Mouse O: cannot open input device
(ee) PreInit failed for input device "Mouse 0"
     No Core pointer
Then it says if I would like to read the entire input. Here is everything with a (WW) and a (ee) tag that isn't part of what is above:
Code:
(ee) Fatal Server error:
      failed to initialize core devices
(WW) Bad V_BIOS CHECKSUM
(WW) Config file hsynce range 31.5-67kHz not within DDC hsynce ranges.
(ww) Config file vrefresh range 50-75 Hz not within DDC vrefresh ranges.
(ww) No core pointer registered.
It then says if I would like to fix the problem. If I choose yes, I enter my root password and I choose a mouse and after I choose the kind of mouse I have, it either goes back to the login screen or I have a black screen with black verticle strips at the top.
If I choose no, I get a normal terminal logged in screen with no flashing between the distored acer screen or the terminal.

Now I'm not quite literate in terminal commands beyond cd and /shutdown and stuff. I want a freakin GUI! Oh wizards of this forum please help me. If you guys need anymore info, tell me what you need and how to get it and I will provide it. Thanks for any help you guys provide.

I would guess this arrose from the upgrade from X11R6 to X11R7.

I would recommend backing up any data and reinstalling FC5 to a blank partition.

As in, uninstall Fedora completely and go back to using Windows? Do you have a separate /boot partition? If so, you can just boot into Windows, go to Disk Management (which you can reach by right-clicking My Computer and selecting Manage) and deleting the Fedora partition. Before you do this, you might want to go into Fedora and modify your /boot/grub/grub.conf file, to select Windows as the default, turn down the timeout and remove the Fedora entry.

If you do not have a separate /boot partition, you can still delete the Fedora partition from inside Windows, but you will then need to repair your MBR. This can be done by booting the Windows CD and using recovery mode, but you'll need to look up the details because I can't remember them off the top of my head.

If the only reason you want to delete your Fedora partition is to install another version of Linux, there's no need. The installer for your next version should allow you to sort out the partitions while you install.

So, did the clean install take care of this problem? I'm in the exact same situation. Last night I upgraded from FC 1 to FC 5 and got the exact same error regarding the mouse after the upgrade. As mrcheesypants showed, it references /dev/psaux, which does not exist on my system after the upgrade.

I was going to go ahead and do a clean install since my FC 1 machine is only serving http right now, and I have everything backed up, but I came here to see if anyone else had the same problem. It must be related to the X11R7 upgrade mentioned by rconan. I'm going to go ahead and remove the FC 1 partition and do a clean FC 5 install tonight.

If the only error you're getting refers to the mouse, you could try editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf to fix it. A common location for the mouse is under /dev/mouse.

I also don't have /dev/mouse.

I just backed up a few html files that were on there, wiped the drive, did a clean FC 5 install, and so far everything is looking great.
