ok hi im new at linux for the most part. i installed aim on it cause i hate Gaim and now i cant get it to run. i brought up the command line (i think) and typed in /usr/bin/aim and the command line goes away and nothing else happens. when i go to the instal file it says its installed already. plz help with this. im running fedora core 1 with a dell gx1 512 ram linux on a 20 gig drive xp on 40 gig.
Fedora 1 is pretty old? Why not get FC4? Regards to Gaim, I think it's prolly your best option. The Gaim shipped in FC4 has many more features than the Gaim shipped in FC1.
i got fedora 1 with a dummy book and it was there i had ubuntu but fedora looks better. i will look into getting fedora 4 but i see ppl having alot of problems with it in the forums kinda scares me a lil.
Nothing really to be scared about. Ubuntu has great reviews and it's not necessarily the distro that makes the system look pretty, rather the Window Manager, KDE, Gnome, Fluxbox, etc.. which generally run on most distros.
Gaim is definately the more feature packed Instant Messenger available for linux atm. Aim (last time i tried), had serious UI problems. Gaim does have some bad points which are on their todo list.
If your not sure what the command line is, it's generally a black screen with a blinking cursor. (test: typing "ls" should list all files in the current directory, otherwise it isn't a console.)
Some command line programs are "Terminal", "Konsole", "eTerm", "xTerm", "aTerm", etc..
RPM's are generally the easier way to install applications on fedora, their filenames will generally end in _fcX.rpm, where X is your fedora version. For information on installing/uninstalling them, read the man pages, "man rpm" in a command line.
In regards to running programs, check to see if the program has been added to the start (main) menu, otherwise try "rpm -qa | grep X" or "whereis X" on the command line where X is the application name, if they return something, then most likely the application is installed and can be run by typing the application name on the command line.
thank you for the help i was typing it in wrong thing (yeah i know real smart. anyway i ordered fc4 last night since downloading 5 600 mb files will take me forever. so for the next 3-5 days im gonna play around with fc1 to get feet wet i think than try instal on fc4 and prey it goes smoothly. ty everyone for ur help
