Networking Printing Failure (from Linix To Winxp)

Hi,

I have just installed Fedora 4 on my PC at work. Everything is great. But I cannot print anything on a shared printed from WXP Pro.

I have tested the printer and the WXP machine is working normal. Other WXP machines can print from this shared printer.

I have use System Settings -> Printing: then I enter the IP of the WXP machine 192.168.x.x and the name of the printer. Then the status shows "speciified" for the printer.

But when I try to print test page and whatever anything, nth comes out. Neither the printer nor the printer status window in the WXP machine.

My Fedora and WXP can ping each other correctly. But then nth else seems to be working.

Please let me know what I can do.

Many thanks.

Roy

I'm not sure what printing interface the "System Setting" route uses, but have you tried configuring the shared printer in CUPS? On your Fedora machine, navigate your web browser to "http://localhost:631" and then click on "Manage Printers". In fact, I wrote up a mini-howto on my blog about getting a USB print server up and running in Fedora Core 4:

I would imagine it's not too dissimilar to that, except that you likely won't need the printer port part. You can replace that with "lp", so that the "Device URI" is

Code:

lpd://192.168.x.x/lp
I'm not sure that will work, but I think the CUPS interface will give you your best chance to get this figured out.

Thank you Mad Scientist. I will definitely try the method on your website. I think I have overlooked the cups part before.
