Network Config Help

I am trying to change the name of the wireless network i want to connect to. It used to be Stewie and stewie had an encryption key. Now i want to connect to linksys with no key.

I have tried changing it using iwconfig, it changes it for a little bit but just goes back. I have edited
/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg.eth1
/etc/sysconfig/networking/default/ifcfg.eth1 (orwhatever it is)

and i still cannont connect, when i do iwconfig the ESSID goes right back to stewie. I have changed all those then stopped the network service then started it again... nothing always goes to stewie, and i cant connect.
if anyone can help me with this that would be awesome
thank you

Do a 'grep -i stewie * -R' in the sysconfig directory. The essid may be set in a general config file that causes it to be set. I don't use slackware, but in SuSE, the 'network/wireless' file might contain a 'WIRELESS_ESSID=...' line. You may have a similar line where ESSID is being set.

Infering from your post, I hope that you don't think that obscuring the identity of the network provides any kind of security. It will only prevent someone from unintentionally connecting to your network.

If you're running Slackware, why is this thread in the Fedora forum?
