Do a 'grep -i stewie * -R' in the sysconfig directory. The essid may be set in a general config file that causes it to be set. I don't use slackware, but in SuSE, the 'network/wireless' file might contain a 'WIRELESS_ESSID=...' line. You may have a similar line where ESSID is being set.
Infering from your post, I hope that you don't think that obscuring the identity of the network provides any kind of security. It will only prevent someone from unintentionally connecting to your network.
