Need help resizing partition on Fedora 6

I would like to set up a multi-boot system with several OSes. I installed Windows XP first into a 25 GB NTFS partition, leaving 55 GB free on my hard drive.

I then installed Fedora 6 and during the installation process, I selected to install Fedora into existing free space and not touch other partitions. I noticed that anaconda specified the size of the new Linux partition was going to be over 51 GB. I couldn't change this, so I figured I would just resize the partition after installation.

Nope.

I can't resize the partition with Norton Partition Magic or Gparted. The option to resize the partition is greyed out in both aps. Gparted tells me I have:

/dev/sda1 ntfs 24.41 GB
/dev/sda2 ext3 /boot 101.98 MB
/dev/sda3 unknown 50 GB flag: lvm

Partition Magic says that sda3 is "type 8E".

Can someone please tell me how to resize sda3 from 50 GB to 10 GB? I also tried to use "Logical Volume Management" which I found in the system menu. Thanks very much.

LVM stands for Logical Volume Management. Last time I installed Ubuntu (which also likes to use LVM if you let it partition the way it wants, as does Fedora) I didn't let it do it's usual LVM stuff because I don't need it and it's easier for me to have just "regular" partitions.

Actually I'm not sure how you resize partitions that use LVM. LVM is good for some stuff, like for example if you add a new harddisk to the system it can make things easier, but on the other hand it's not for everyone. However I found this from Google:

http://www.trueblade.com/knowledge/r...partition.html

maybe reading it helps. Doing some searching with the search engines on the web doesn't harm you, so before posting it's a good idea to try it, and check (using "Search" found at the top of the page) if there's already something here at LQ.
