Need help for a disabled US Army Veteran

My name is James Tate and I'm a disabled US Marine Vietnam Veteran.
I have a friend that is a disabled US Army Vietnam veteran that lives in PanamaCity, Florida and he has a Fedora Computer that needs to be upgraded to the latest version of KDE-Fedora and he will pay for the services.

I live in Indianapolis, Indiana and I have helped him the best I can, but he needs someone that lives closer to him. I hate to have to throw him back to the Windows Wolfs , he has been a Linux User for the last ten years.

If there is anyone out there that would be willing to help, please call me at 317-781-8360

I forgot to tell you my friend in Florida has a yard full of Antique Cars, one of two 1957 Ford Thunderbirds I would like to have.

What version of fedora is he using?
Best way is to backup important data and then install the latest version of FC.

Unless there is someone local to him comfortable with reloading the box every little while (every 3 or 6 months) I recommend something more 'rolling release" than Fedora. New releases for Fedora come often and there is no in-place migration path between major versions.

I would love to help, but I am as far from him as you are.

Void is a possible candidate to replace Fedora, and so is something like SPARKY LINUX. I am looking for something a little less "hands-on" though. I am currently running Q4OS, and it seems to be solid, but I have not had to do a major version migration with it yet.

Perhaps someone else can advise.
Is Mint-DE appropriate?

The version he is around 10-15.
When I do a upgrade I have three partitions /, home , swap and I never format /home, just / and use same passwords and i have never lost any files in /home and Fedora picks up /home and uses it as before.

he has only used Kde-Fedora and I don't want to change him from that, he is very limited on how to use a computer.

Hi...

Do you know what brand and model (and model number) of computer he's using, along with some of the hardware specs, such as the processor, amount of memory, graphics card, etc.? This is going to have an impact on whether or not he can run the newest version of Fedora without experiencing a degree of sluggishness, especially from a version that old.

Considering wpeckham's advice, if running the current version of Fedora is feasible, it might be a better idea to have him back up everything he wants to save on a thumb drive and install the newest version by scratch.

Thank you both for your service.

Regards...

In case no one here on LQ is able to help, I did find a technician here who might be able to help.

I did, however, my question is still applicable regardless of whoever works on your friend's system.

Have him load teamviewer on it then remote in.

I recommend that you remove your personal phone number.

Jefro: how will that help with a native iron install? Fedora cannot normally be updated in place, certainly not from that far back, under control of any remote access program. He would need something like ILO on an HP server class machine to be able to run an install from remote.
