ndiswrapper on FC6 x86_64
Greetings, everyone. New guy here.
I'm having some trouble getting FC6 to recognize my D-Link DWL-G510 (Rev. B). I have installed ndiswrapper successfully, and it looked like the Windows driver for the card took, as well (ndiswrapper -i /opt/DLink/Drivers/NetA3AB.inf). However, it's saying the device for wlan0 is not present on startup. If I go to Administration -> Network, I see the device (inactive) on the first two tabs. If I try to activate it, it fails. Can anyone lend a hand? Thanks. |
Well for anyone else having this problem, the end result turned out to be that the default Windows driver is not a 64 bit driver. I guess my solution is to find a 64 bit driver or run the 32 bit OS on my Athlon64 machine.
Anyone know of any 64 bit Atheros drivers? |
I no expert as I just installed FC5 for the first time last week and x86_64 FC6 yesterday. I think you need to use the madwifi drivers for the D-link card with the Atheros chipset. I used the ndiswrapper drivers for my Linksys BroadComm cards.
I followed the instructions here to install the madwifi packages: http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/Distro/RedHat I did install the kernel-devel package first as well. Code:
yum install kernel-devel I found the easiest way to install madwifi was to use the Livna repository. Just do Code:
yum install kmod-madwifi http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/FirstTimeHowTo I had to reboot before my network config would see the ath0 device. Once it did I was able to set the essid and security key to connect to my router. Hope this helps. it worked for me and I'm a complete noob... |
Hello NomadicLogic,
You're correct in thinking you'll need 64 bit versions of the drivers however these are provided by the livna repository as Dragnet pointed out and rather than wrapping the windows version you cna at least use a native linux version which I believe would be more stable - indeed this post is written using the 32 bit madwifi atheros drivers!
