MySQL install and start problems

Hi all

A mate and i have been trying to get mysql right with no luck

I started off with mysql ( mysql --version
mysql Ver 11.18 Distrib 3.23.58, for redhat-linux-gnu (i386)

tried to upgrade to version 4 with no luck

so we went back to the older version and we are still having troube
with a couple of errors

[root@localhost root]# /etc/init.d/mysql status
-bash: /etc/init.d/mysql: No such file or directory
[root@localhost root root]# /etc/init.d/mysql start
-bash: /etc/init.d/mysql: No such file or directory
[root@localhost root root]# mysql
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
[root@localhost root root]#

what else should we be looking for .

or is it easyer to remove every thing to do with mysql and start again using the lastest version which is what we wanted in the first place.

Can any one gives us some ideas please

OS is FC2

TT
