mysql does'nt launch

Hi:
Iam trying to launch mysql by writing 'mysql' command on root but it gives me this error:
[root@localhost /]# mysql
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

Can any body help me with this?

Thanks in advance;
jonny

is the server running? test
ps -e | mysql

if not you have to start the server first. depending on your installation you can test
/etc/init.d/mysql start (for rpm-based or debian package installation)
or
/usr/local/mysql/bin/safe_mysqld start &

if both dont work take a look at the docs

You can put a mysql startup script (or a link to a startup script)
in /etc/rc.d/rc<run level>.d

This web page may give you more details

I would check the boot time messages under /var/log and see if there are any errors.

(It should work)

Did you also check /var/log/messages?

Also, the following article may help you ---

If you're using Fedora you should be able to set it to start via /sbin/chkconfig. Try running /sbin/chkconfig --list | grep mysql and see what its setting is for Runlevel 5. If you are booting multi-user mode with X then you are probably using Runlevel 5 and not 3 as I've seen written above.
