My Fedora 17 didn't seem to have gcc
 

Yesterday I prepared a memory stick, via LinuxLive, containing "Fedora 17 Beefy Miracle (Gnome)" It booted OK, and installed OK, but the installation did not contain 'gcc'. Did I do something wrong? (I've used Fedora for many years, but very simply, and I'm simple-minded, so treat me as a newbie.)

It is difficult for me to get 'gcc' after the install using 'yum', as I do not have Internet installed.

('tcsh' and 'gimp' also seemed to be missing. Worst-comes-to-worst, I can get them via download; make ... but make needs 'cc' and I did not get 'gcc' when I installed Beefy Miracle.)

Help, please.

(ETA: Resolved, I think. I used 0.6 GB "CD iso" and should have used 3.6 GB "DVD iso".)

Clearly you can't fit *EVERYTHING* on a minimal installation, that's kinda the point of it. There are vast amounts of things not included. That doesn't mean they are "missing" by any means.

My 2 cents here:
I like to describe Fedora as 'beta forever'. It is just testing for RedHat guys (not that it is bad) so people who install something as bleeding edge as Fedora are tester and debuggers. I am not one anyway. I want my computer up and running and continue running until I tell it to stop and honestly only slackware is the one that does this. Just one dvd but then it will beat the s***t out of any other distro.

Well as mentioned about above, it's really not "bleeding edge". It's generally pretty stable and reliable and I've been happily using it for a long time with and without a developer hat on.

I am not "married" to Fedora. Perhaps FreeBSD would be easier to install and suit me better. I'm even installing Cygwin Unix under Windows as I type. I've never tried such a thing but maybe it will meet my needs.

Fedora Progress report:

I downloaded a 3.6 GB DVD Iso and burned a "Live Linux" USB drive. LinuxLive USB Creator warned me that that iso wasn't supported for Live and, sure enough, I couldn't boot or install successfully. I did mount it and point a repo line at it and type
yum install ...gcc... //don't remember exact long name of gcc package
I was told the package was incompatible. Don't know why. One was x86_64 or some such; other x686_64 or such. (In any case, they both were the downloads presented as defaults at Fedora's pages.)

If I understand correctly, another option is to create a bootable USB drive without using LiveLinux, and then install, overwriting the Fedora I installed two days ago. I'll try that -- please tell me EXACTLY how to make that USB drive.

As I mentioned, booting from CD failed (I got to prompt but it was "unable to mount"). USB boot worked OK. I don't know if DVD boot will work, but this option would delay me as it's a 3-hour round trip drive to nearest place that sells blank DVD's. (Did I mention that I live in a very remote area?)

And again, connecting to Internet from Linux is not a detour I want to try. The special Windows driver does password-handshaking with my (wireless) provider; and Linux may not be supported.

(Recall that I've used Fedora for many years, admittedly for very straightforward tasks; I know what I want. I'm just trying to get this new laptop configured half as well as my old, broken, laptop.)
