Must boot interactively
I did a few YUM updates and my kernel was updated to
2.6.16-1.2108FC4 with Init 2.85
With these updates, I cannot boot automatically, I must boot
in interactive mode. When asked, "start service local,
I choose," I choose "No" It seems to start normally from there. Is there a way to correct this? If I must do a reinstall, so be it. FC4 is still new enough on this system for re-installation; or, should I just go ahead and install FC5?
Thanks in advance for your help,
-s

What is PROMPT set to in /etc/sysconfig/init? Exists file /var/run/confirm?

rc.local starts stuff that's not in the other SysV initscripts be aware of that. If there's a problem with one of the actions in rc.local it's better to test and correct it instead of (false) remedying it by not running rc.local at all.

Reinstalling is typical Wintendo behaviour where you do not (have any chance to) understand internals. This behaviour should never be promoted when using Linux where you *do* posess all the means (information, community support, sourcecode and tools) to make things work.
or, should I just go ahead and install FC5?
FC5 can be considered "bleeding edge". That means the bleeding will be done solely by you. A tourniquet may or may not be available.

the local service generally just runs the contents /etc/rc.local so you may have (unknowingly) added something in there. show us what it says in that file.

Must boot Interactively (tempoarily fixed)
I had to install FC 5 anyway. My DSL modem/Router was fried by a power surge; fortunately, I have insurnce and a new one.
Once the new one was configured with NT, I shank that partition
to make room for FC 5. I think my problem was more of a
boot environment issue and I'll investigate more on this.......
