mp3s do not play and permission denied when trying to access win partitions on FC5
Hi everyone,
I've had these problems for a while now. First I was unable to mount windows partitions /permission denied/. Then they ended up in System/storage media (maybe they've been there all along, but I'd never looked))))))
When i try to access them, however, i get an error msg 'Permission denied'. I am logged as Root though.
2nd problem is that players recognise mp3 files, but cannot play them. And, if i try playing them from a cd i get an error msg 'file does not exist'
First, since you're posting to the Fedora forum, I'll assume you're using one of the Fedora distributions. If this is the case, you should be aware that Fedora does not support NTFS "out of the box," and that you need to have installed an NTFS driver from, for example, the livna repository.
Since you state that your Windows partitions are visable, I will assume that you've done that. I will also assume that you're aware that the access to the drive is "read only," and that you are not attempting to write to the drive.
If all the above assumption are correct, the "Permission Denied" message has been caused by the Windows permission settings on your Windows partition(s). That is, in your Windows system, when you set up the access controls ("sharing") to the Windows drive, you neglected to give "root" access to the "share." To fix the access problem, you need to log in to the Windows system and change the access to the share. Note that, if you don't want to give everyone access to the share, you'll need to create userid's on the Windows system that match the names of the users on the Linux system who will access the "share."
Aside: Why are you running as "root" in a Linux system? That's not a "good thing" to be doing. If you need root access for specific tasks, check out info sudoers and give yourself sudo privileges.
Edit: Re the MP3 problem, which MP3 player(s) do you have installed, and do you have the required codecs also installed? Real Player 10 and mplayer work well.

the fedora mp3 question must have been asked a zillion times. i don't even use fedora and i know the reason. there's also a fedora faq, the very first item google returns when you use "fedora mp3" as the search terms. http://www.fedorafaq.org/#mp3
thanx for the info. i don't believe that the problem comes from windows, since i hadn't such problems with other disros. anyway, i looked into what you suggest but, as far as i can see, nothing protects my windows partitions that would result in them not being able to be visible from linux. any other ideas?
