Hello mrbutabara!
Do you have libmad package installed? It is needed for mp3 playback on every distro. Install it with your package manager.

A common thing in Fedora and many other distro for mp3 support. MP3 is not open source so many do not include to avoid lawsuits.

Check out this site of many things to get working on Fedora Core.

@pusrob - i don't know where to find the libmad package or where to see if it has been installed. what would the command be to find/install it?

@brian1 - thanks for that site. i'll be reading it quite often. even though it's for fedora5, would those commands still be good for fedora6 (the distro i'm using)?

You have to install the full XMMS in Fedora. The Fedora rpm package leaves the MP3 support out. Or install the rpm package for mp3 for XMMS. The web site I listed will mention that. You can use the website for most of the info. Just have to changes the repos listed for your distro.
