mozilla/xmms probs on FC1 w dial-up internet

greetings

First up I have a quite unreliable dial-up and I use kppp to connect to my ISP, but usually if I connect I will stay connected.

I think I am seeing unpredictable behaviour when using xmms to listen to a music cd and surf with Mozilla 1.5 at the same time.

The connection seems to die, but kppp does not pop up with any errors, although my modem lights app will show no through-put when I try to load a new page.

Also, sometimes I'll click my kppp icon, (Gnome 2.4) enter the root pw and instead of giving me the connect window kppp will just evaporate

I don't think I can reproduce the problem reliably so I am wondering if any other FC1 users are seeing something similar.

I use kppp because I could not get ppp to work properly on my comp. in RH9 or FC1.

Thanks,

Mark

I have exactly the same setup that you do except that I do not use xmms. I have never had your problem. Perhaps xmms sometimes hogs resources to the point that kppp does not get a chance to run. I suggest that you use the top command to monitor what everything is doing and see if you can find any rogue software in the works. See:
man top

Thanks Jailbait, I thought about resources first but my system has a 2gig p4 and 768 mb ram.

Also when xmms is active kppp frequently doesn't seem to be able to connect, either the modem reports a busy signal or the dialog box just stops at "connect", no sounds from modem, no error messages zilch.

When xmms is not active kppp always connects first time.

I'll mess around with "top" tonight when I get home,

thanks again,
mark
