Unhappy Mozilla apps font shrinkage - unasked for :-(

Heil Bush!

No doubt a very simple question but I'm damned if I can figure it:

Am running FC8 (excellent OS, particularly with ADSL2) on an "ancient" Athlon 2400, 768megs of RAM.

For some reason or other the screen resolution seems to have "defaulted" itself from my usual 832x624 to 1280 x ?? or something like that after installing some app or other (Audacity??)

And now for some reason the application fonts in both Thunderbird and Firefox seem to have shrunk themselves down so small as to be almost unreadable. I seem to have been able to resize all the other desktop etc fonts OK but even after getting into both the Mozilla apps "Preferences" I can't seem to get their GUIs' fonts back up to a readable size.
The fonts in the messages themselves, when I open them, are perfectly adjustable>areadablesize but not the font sizes in the apps own GUIs. I've done a few "manual adjustments" in the advanced config list - antialias.min from 10>16 and a few others like that but I can't seem to get the fonts back to a readable size.

You can change the firefox menu fonts as follows:

1. Create an empty text file and name it userChrome.css;

2. Cut and paste the following text into userChrome.css:
  * {
font-size: 13pt !important;
3. Copy userChrome.css to /home/<username>/.mozilla/firefox/<8 character random string>.default/chrome

The next time you open firefox, the menu/gui fonts will be 13pt. If that's too big, edit userChrome.css to 12pt, 10pt, etc. If it's too small, edit to 14pt, 16pt, etc. You have to close and open firefox before your edits will take effect.

Thumbs up

Manx very thuch. :-)
Worked perfectly - and in Tbird too - the Chrome folder was empty there (ie in .thunderbird) but the userChrome.css (@16point) did exactly the same fontsize correction job there.
I see that the solution was there in the userChrome-example.css files but **ed out.

As I said in my question FC8+ADSL seems to be the answer to the "which computer OS?" question - apart from the way these random "glitches" seem to occur. I've learnt to keep well away from K3b which, in spite of having sometimes been a very good, useful app seems to automatically destroy the excellent Gnome GUI.

I'd better ask for my money back :-) :-)

Thank you again!

Paul W

BTW - was it in Brautigan or Vonnegut that you live?? Dropouts in my aged cerebralCPU/RAM.

How are you installing K3b? I have not had any trouble (desktop wise) with the ones from the standard repos.

Thanks Guys.... this has been a nagging Firefox problem I have not bothered too deal with on my FC8 box. There was an example file that I tried to uncomment out and use but it wouldn't work... I ended up using Kilgoretrout's snippet of code and all is good
