mount External HDD - USB
 

I am using Fedora Core 4 , I want to mount a 80GB toshiba external USB HDD , but I always receive the error message "ntfs not supported file system" , can some one tell me an easy way to mount this drive to Linux file system , I am NOT experienced in linux ,

kernel module needed
 

In order to access ntfs volumes you need to have the kernel module installed. I know on more recent versions of fedora you could do the following as root.

# yum install kmod-ntfs

I have not used fc4, but this worked in 5 and 6. It would be worth installing a newer core too if you are just starting out. Just a thought. Here is a link to the package you need for fc4.

hank youvery much for repones , I download the RPM file and double click on it , then it started running and returned an error message saying that the following file is missing in /boot/,

vmlinuz-2.6.17-1.2142_FC4 ,

I could not find a place to download this file in internet ,

the current file I have in /boot/ is

vmlinuz-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 ,

can you pls tell me how to overcome this issue ,

You received that error because you use Mandriva Linux, and the package you are trying to install is a Fedora package that needs the Fedora kernel.

I wouldn't say you are using mandriva rather then fedora, unless you mistyped 'vmlinuz-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4' as your current kernel and incorrectly stated you were running fedora core 4.


For the newer kernel look at http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....17-1.2142_FC4


# uname -v

will return something along the lines of

Linux ares 2.6.18.8-0.1-default #1 SMP Fri Mar 2 13:51:59 UTC 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

The underlined part is what I want you to notice. I'm not sure of the difference in i586/i686. I never looked into the difference in the two, I have always been on i686. Which I'd assume is what you need assuming you are on a newer system. There is a link to the rpm on the site above, and if you find you are on the i686 version I'd look for a different rpm for the ntfs module.

hope this helps. I'd still consider looking into a newer version of fedora. Just a thought... as I said before I never used FC4 but package management in 5 and 6 was pretty easy. I rarely had to install rpm's manually unless the dependency check failed to resolve. Also, I think fc4 has been moved to legacy.
