Mount an Extended Windows partition

I tried to mount a fat32 partition and I keep getting an error message. I am not on my linux box so I cant give the exact error but it is something like "Failed to mount, drive may be busy or have to many mappings" or hopefully close to that. It also mentioned something about this being an extended partition instead of a logical partition...

I used the command
Code:
mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/windows -t vfat
Should I be using a different command or different options to mount an extended partition.

Looking at Hardware Browser, I am sure it is hda5 that I want and I am sure this is a fat32 partition.

Any help would be appreciated. Also let me know if more information is needed.

Thanks,

Shane

Hi Shane.

I am looking to do a similar thing and it would be nice if you could share with me and others who come across this thread what you were doing wrong. Even the silly mistakes are useful to us!

I figured it out, so in case someone happens across this in a search for information (as I did), here is the answer: The syntax was reversed. It should read:

Code:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda5 /mnt/windows
Furthermore, to get your fat32 partition automatically mounted at boot, just add the following line to your /etc/fstab file:

Code:
/dev/hda5 /mnt/windows vfat defaults,umask 002 0 0
note: this lets any user read and run files on the drive. change 002 to 007 to lock them out.
(see this link for some well-laid-out info)

Hope this is useful.

if i could make a suggestion boys why dont you mount the windows drive while installation by choosing manual partitioning and selcting the windows partions and "edit" it for defining a mount point.

My mistake is much more embarrassing... I was typing the wrong partition. I even told you guys that I was sure Hda5 was the partition I needed... and it was Hda5 that I wanted to mount...For the life of me, I just cant understand why the 3 times I typed the command I put Hda3.... lol.
