there is a monitor setup in preferences, there you can pick the closest model of your monitor...then in your monitor manuel search for Hsync and Vsync...should probably be in a table listing the resolution that each Hsync and Vsync works for...the Hsync is the Horizontal hrz that the monitor displays at...and Vsync is the Vertical Khrz that the monitor displays at...and depending on what screen resolution....I would search for 640x480 and 1024x768 then you could put somthing like this in your XFree config file:
Code:

Hsync40.3-73
Vsync 60-85

Depending on your monitor the 40.3-73 and 60-85 would change to the 640x480 and the 1024x768 (640x480 being the 40.3 and 60, 1024x768 being 73 and 85) you can just search the x.org or XF86Config file depending on your XFree version, for the monitor section where it displays the monitor Vsync Hsync and screen resolutions available.

I probably explained this a little wrong, so hopfully someone will come along and explain it more clearly.

now if it really doesn't matter then you can just go into the preferences in the Gnome start menu and I think it's labled under monitor, there you can pick the monitor that closest to your monitor
