You need to create an ISO file then burn it to CD. You can not write directly to a CD

mkbootdisk --iso --device boot.iso 2.6.10-1.766_FC3smp

The FC3 kernel is to big to fit on a floppy disk. My Fedora install crashed awhile ago so I can not confirm what you are saying using the graphical tools. With the above method you can create an ISO image and then burn to CD using any installed burning application.
