maintaining fedora properly by choosing the right repo

hello!
i've used fedora core 1, 2, and now 3. after a while with each previous installation yum stopped functioning and my system was no longer able to be updated from repository package conflicts. i would like to avoid that this time

so i would like ask how to choose what repository to enable.
by default in /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo only has fedora.redhat.com available so i can't "yum install mplayer" & other useful accessories. by enabling ayo.freshrpms.net and some others last time i created package incompatabilities that as a relatively new linux user i couldn't figure out how to fix. do some repositories actually work together? some don't?

i'd be really grateful for any insight!!

thanks again,
disorderly

Fedora Core 3 comes with huge softwares.... I check the list.... Almost applications that I need are already there. Some applications mission from there are mostly related with multimedia..... I don't want to populate the official repository with another third party repository.... I just don't feel clean if I mix them. So I install them ( the applications missing from fedora core cd ) manually.... maybe from the official rpm from the developer, or compiling sources.....

So my fedora core system feels clean............. I remember when the first time I use fedora core 1, I add many third party repository.... I didn't get any problem...... strange, that you have one....

well for the rest of us that need multimedia installs (DVD support, mp3 support etc.. ) that stuff is not included in the FC3 original distro so we have to find it. i've been doing alot of reading over the last week and have found significantly more information than has been available in the past (and i've grown tired of conflicting packages!!)

here is a list of resources to help better understand choosing your package sources:
WLUG-wiki
DAG FAQs
the multiple repository problem
fedora forum
fedora WIKI
redhat.com

well hopefully that will help others in making their decisions because i can tell you for a newb it's a real pain in the ass when you can no longer update anything!!
enjoy,

The information is out-of-date and only half the truth. What you link as "fedora WIKI" is an old one and closed for some time. The new one, which also covers
Fedora Extras
, is located at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki

Fedora Extras and http://rpm.livna.org (an open project run by community volunteers) do not conflict with Fedora Core and do not replace or upgrade packages from Fedora Core.

A group of 3rd party packagers (Dag Wieers, Matthias Saou, Dries Verachtert, Rudolf Kastl) work together using the name rpmforge and provide packages which may conflict with Fedora Extras and other repositories.

There are additional repositories which are much more aggressive in what they include, and some upgrade and rename packages from Fedora Core at your own risk.

yep that's what the info amounts to:
either use extras/livna OR use FreshRPMS, PlanetCCRMA, Dries and DAG (e.g. other 3rd party rpm's) just dont' mix them!!

You can't mix arbitrary 3rd party repositories freely. Only those where work continues towards fixing overlapping content and getting rid of conflicts.

Further, stay away from 3rd party packages which upgrade or replace packages within Fedora Core. Unless you really know what you're doing.

I use:

extras
freshrpms
and a little bit of dag and I don't have any problems. I've been using fedora/redhat for what seems like ever and there are ones I wouldn't mix or use.

THis is is 5 different box's ranging from x86 - x86_64 fc3/rawhide.

YMMV, I just don't use livna/atrpms I might pull a package once in awhile from them, but that is about it.

Try This!

I have always used the FedoraFaq.org site for my yum needs. They have built a yum.conf specific to FC. I only use livna, fedora.us, jpackage so I have never had a problem, but yum does give you the oppurtunity to enable different repos if you need a specific package then you can disable it later.

Good Luck!

You can also check this out:

I use Base, Updates, Extra's, Freshrpms and Dag's all the time without problems.

Well, rpm.livna.org is made specifically to be compatible with Fedora Core and Fedora Extras. So, no problems there.

Lets not take it out of context

Plus I run 2 x86_64 box's and livna isn't very loaded, I simply stated what I use and what I like.
