login repeatedly fails

I have fedora 8 on one computer and I just finished installing fedora 9 on another one, and they both have a similar problem with logging in. I choose my user and then I type in my password, and then the screen goes blank and when it comes back up again, it prompts me again for the password (so I can never log in as that user). I know I'm not typing it in wrong, because if I intentionally type the wrong password it gives me the standard error message for that. If I do it correctly, then it prompts me as though for the first time ad infinitum. On the Fedora 8 machine it used to let me log in as my usual user, but now I can only get in as root. On the Fedora 9 install, it won't let me login as anybody!

Hi there,

To me it seems like X is crashing ...

try 'startx' when you log into a console

and this probabally start the gui.

alternatively you can log in as the root and type 'kdm' or 'gdm' - your display manager.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips. However, I would like for it to actually work, instead of needing a workaround.

Ok, I figured out the problem in the new install, although I still haven't figured it out for the computer that only lets me login as root.

On the machine that doesn't let me log in as anybody, for some reason X installed but no particular desktop was there (I had picked xfce in the installer, but it never got installed).

Hi,

Glad to see that you have figured it out

I faced a similar problem when gnome-desktop was not installed. You could log in via a VT but not with da gui. In the end i installed gnome-desktop set some stuff up and removed that package again.
