"Your home directory is listed as:'home/user' but it does not appear to exist. Do you want to log in with the /(root)directory as your home directory? It is unlikely anything will work unless you use a failsafe session."
The other error I was getting was:
"Users $Home./dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language form being saved. File should be owned by user, and have 644 permissions. User's $Home directory must be owned by user and not be writable by other users."
I had messed up the permission while studying the fix was.
Under su to set the following settings.
/home - set owner to the user and set permissions to 700.
/home/user/.dmrc -set owner to the user and set permissions to 644 for the file.
/home/user/.bash_profile-set owner to the user and set permissions to 770 for the file.
Note: I posted this because I search the net and didn't find that answer.
I'm new to linux so this took me about a few hours to fix.
