lirc lircd installation freevo

The setup guide for freevo has a step that says to be sure to create /dev/lirc and /dev/lircd.
Her's the URL if you care to see what they said.

How do I create a device. mknod? I get error messages. I tried the --help and still got error messages. So, I'm not getting the syntax right. What is the correct syntax for creating these devs.
Thanks for putting me straight.
