Linux will not boot on eMachines 366is

I have a eMachines 366is. Whenever I try to boot from CD I end up in one of two problems. One problem is that for some distros it won't read at all. Then others actually boot, but when I get to the installer, it says it can't find the install disc. What is my problem? I know the computer reads CD-R's, and I burned extracted ISO's.

Edit: My system specs are as follows:
64 Mb RAM
Maxtor HD, 3 GB
Intel onboard graphics controller
Runs Windows 98
I plan on using a server install of fedora.

What do you mean by "extracted" *.iso?

Dark_Wolf 06-04-2007 05:11 PM

I mean I've burned the ISO's contents to disc, not the ISO itself

Do you mean you used "Burn Disc from Image" or did you use a program to extract all the contents to a directory, then burn all the contents to a data CD? (You should have done the first one.)

the first one. The CD works on any other computer.

Sorry, I just looked at your system specs. Some distros might not boot because you only have 64MB RAM. Have you tried a lightweight like Xubuntu or Damn Small linux? I know Debian's installer requires 48MB minimum...

My main problem is that they boot but don't find the CD during the installation.
And of those three, which would be best for a server install?

I personally like Debian because you can install a small system and then build what you want using aptitude. Here's a good Debian site to help you get a lot of stuff up and running without X. If you need/want X, you can just aptitude install xorg xdm icewm.
