Linux Router w/ only one LAN Card

Hi!

I'm looking for any how-to's on configuring Fedora Core 4 as a linux router, Is it possible even if it has only one LAN card? Usual howto's used 2 lan cards. Thank you so much for your help.(sorry for my english)

The problem with using only one card is that the two networks are not separated by the router. This would make it impossible to properly use DHCP and similar technologies on the LAN. File and printer sharing would be insecure because it would expose it to the public side of the network as well.

A LAN card can be had for ~$10. It's well worth it: it'll make things so much simpler and more secure. :)

Hi!
thank you so much for the reply, i need to use it as a demo first of using linux as a router, I've installed Fedora Core 4, test run an oracle 10g on it, den we need to route the clients, so if its possible to used just one lan card is there any tutorial on it? Ill also check my luck on google. Thank you so much again.

It is possible to use one lan card, but it will not be easy. You'll need to use IP Aliasing to create two "virtual" interfaces. Then, you can just substitute those in to the standard rotuer howtos and tutorials.

hi!
thanks! i've been searching until now, and still I cant find any howto on routing, I'm trying to configure the linux box as another network w/ other machines connected to it, so that the linux will be their gateway or something & then they will be able to connect to other private networks. I'd really appreciate for any links on this setup, Thanks so much!

hi!

the linux box is 192.10.11.11 & it can ping the other pc which is 192.10.10.43. there is another pc which is 192.10.11.2 & I've used 192.10.11.11 as it's gateway. what happens is:

192.10.11.2 can ping 192.10.11.11 & vice versa
192.10.11.11 can ping 192.10.10.43
BUT
192.10.11.2 cannot ping 192.10.10.43

what could i be missing? thank you so much again!
