Laptop display problem

I was trying to install Fedora core 1 on my HP pavilion notebook. It all goes smoothly until I reboot, then the login screen is so large that only the words "enter your" appears on the screen. I tried a couple of diferent monitor options on the install, since the Notebook monitor is not specifically mentioned. I didn't have this problem when Redhat 9 was on it, though admittedly I forget what HP monitor configuration I used. Any ideas, or should I just go back to Redhat 9 for the time being?

No. That's the problem. I can't even see where to login. The screen is just huge fonts and they seem to be overlapping. I don't have any files on there so it is no big deal to reinstall. I just don't know if I will run into the same problem. I tried Fedora yarrow core 1 as an upgrade over Redhat 9, that was when the problem started. Then I tried Fedora severn version 3 as a clean install , and Fedora yarrow core 1 again as a clean install, and they both did the same thing. Redhat 9 did not. So did I do something wrong and should I try again, or is anyone have a similar problem or heard of this and I should just go back to redhat 9 until a newer version of Fedora comes out.

see if you can set to boot into runlevel 3 (init 3) which will put you in text mode, from there you can run redhat-config-xfree86 or it might be redhat-config-xfree, not sure.

also in text mode, if you have to, you can edit /etc/X11/XF86Config to set proper resolution and horizsync and vertrefresh.

hit ctrl+alt+F1 and login from there as root

then run /sbin/init 3 to get to text mode..

then edit files such as /etc/X11/XF86Config

What model HP laptop?

It is an HP Pavilion zt1130. I think I can try what you suggest. I didn't know how to boot into text mode. I will try that and get back to you.

I don't use RedHat but this worked in Slackware. As root, do:

XFree86 -configure

This will create XF86Config.new in the /root directory. Replace your current XF86Config file with this one.

This will give you a basic XF86Config file which you can then tweak.

Hi everyone:

I have the same exact problem except that the display is so big it goes beyond the monitor size. When I move the mouse to the left, the whole screeen moves to the left, and then to the right the whole screen moves to the right and so on.

This problem however starts when anaconda starts as soon as the installation starts. The anaconda display is so big that it seems like it is displaying a 640X480 display and stretching it to fit 1024X768. I have tried editing the XFConfig file manually after the install but to no avail. I eventually gave up on Fedora.

Mandrake 9.1 and RedHat 9.0 install and work without any problem. The problem only exisits with Fedora. I also tried upgrading from RedHat 9.0 to Fedora beta and to the Final version, but with same results.

My monitor and video card get detected correctly. Monitor=IBM 2237 C71 with ATI Radeon 7000 card. I have tried switching to generic monitor and generic video card, and all kinds of combination, but still the problem remains. I think the problem is more basic than the XfConfig file, because it starts as soon as anaconda kicks in, and when the boot process goes into graphical mode (after the install). Text display is fine. If I go to init 3, the text size is normal and fits the monitor.

Any suggestions?

On my computer it works fine during install and only does this after the create boot disk. It starts when you reboot. I don't have this problem on my desktop where I use a generic monitor configuration. Only on my Notebook. I haven't tried the Xf config yet, but at least I know that I am not the only one.

You can always copy the XFree86 config file from RH 9 to a Fedora install... it's what I did for my oddball 1680X1050 resolution.

The same problem is with mine also, I've Dell Lat D500 with RH9, the VGA is configured properly but words and icons are big and overlaps. Itried the latest drivers from intel's site but when i install it, the X server won't start so i've to uninstall the drivers agian to original ones. i used Generic LCD display (tried all of them), the problem persisits.
The chipset is Intel 852/855 but detects only 16MB instead of 64MB....
Although i can use the terminal window with some difficulties.
I also tried to change the XFconfig file, but even then it didn't worked right.
Any suggestions??
