keyboard doesn´t respond after plugging in

how can I restart/reload the keyboard on a machine which was before booted without any keyboard/mouse plugged in?
I plugged a PS/2-keyboard in the running system, but it doesn´t respond.

PS2 protocol is NOT hotpluggable (ie, you can't plug it in while the system is running), and depending on the circuitry of your motherboard, there is the very real potential for damage.

I have hotplugged a ps2 keyboard once or twice on accident, and never damaged anything, but it would never work until reboot.

hmm yes, thought its similar with PS/2 mouse behaviour. there you have to switch the desktop from graphical to console and back and then the recently plugged in mouse works.......!?!
