kernel wont boot

Hey,
I just updated my whole system using yum update,

Now i rebooted the computer and it hangs on.

Uncompressing Linux . . . OK, Booting the kernel

All i see is a flashing cursor.

Any ideas on whats up and how to fix it?

i installed kernel-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 but i can boot into the older kernel in GRUB.

Just a guess...

I can't say for sure. It could be an APIC problem. try adding/removing the "noapic" option to the end of the line for the selected kernel in grub.
To do this ,
1. use the arrow keys to select the kernel of ur choice.
2. Press 'e' to edit it.
3. At the end of the line add/remove the word noapic.
4. press enter
5. press 'b' to boot.
