kernel reboots on Fedora 8

After updating with yum to kernel 2.6.25.10-47.fc8 I noticed that after half-way booting up the computer reboots - it does this repeatedly.

In the end I had to boot with the previous kernel version by selecting within GRUB.

I just wanted to know, if anyone else has noticed something similar with kernel 2.6.25.10-47.fc8 after updating.

How much memory has your PC got?

FranDango 07-18-2008 05:13 PM

The computer in question has 768 MB of real RAM and a 256 MB swap space. The system boots into a Terminal login, so X Windows is not launched in any way by default. I would be surprised if this was going to be a memory issue right during booting.

Just to finish the thread:

The power supply component in the hardware was gradually fading into non-existence. In it's initial phase this lead to power drop-outs when running applications that put a higher load on the CPU and as such required more power. Seems to be the reason why it was initially more frequent with the newer kernel and some applications like Konqueror. Later on these power drop-outs became more regular, and lead to rebooting every few minutes. Finally the power supply died entirely.

Replacing the power supply solved the problem completely.
