kernel panic error on reboot

I'm running FC3 2.6.11-1.14. I just installed FC3 on 2 pcs and then downloaded all updates available. One of the pcs will not properly reboot. Something in the reboot script seems to be out of sinc. What I'm getting is...
Shutting down console mouse services:
stopping sshd:
shutting down sendmail: kernel panic-not syncing: drivers/block/cfq-ioshed.c:
1065: spin_is_locked on uninitialized spinlock d877541c. (not tainted)

I wonder what I need to do short of reinstalling FC3, and again downloading the 184 updates?

I'm using linux as a personal desktop os. I don't recall seeing any option for single user mode. I'm convinced my shell is corrupted from either some tinkering I did or the update itself. Since the update is okay in my other pc I'm thinking that the easiest thing to do is reinstall FC3 from disk and then selectively install updates. I have no idea what most the updates are for anyway. Is it encouraged to download all updates when available?

Thanks, Ken.
