kdm WITHOUT X server running

Is there some way to have kdm manage direct logins (like X -query x.x.x.x) without having an X server run locally on the server?

My thinking is that Running X is a Memory and resource Hog. Since the majority of work is being done where the graphics is being displayed (by X run by the user) I see no need to drive the graphics card on the linux server system other than in console mode.

thanks!

Strike my question...just figured it out.

For anybody that cares. Edit the section of gdm.conf so that "0=standard" is commented out.

I also noted (This is Fedora Core 3) that for some reason HAL hung on startup after making this change. I had to disable graphical boot up in /etc/sysconfig/init.

Note the change I stated is for GDM and NOT KDM.

You can configure the clients that are connecting to to always use local x.. then there would be no need to have x running on the server at all.

KDM can be enabled without enabling a local X server by commenting out the line in the Xservers file where kdmrc resides.

At least that is what worked for me.
