just installed fc2 and windows wont boot anymore
hi all,
unfortunately i was just trying out fc2 and ive fell victim to that disk geometry bug in the install. I've read all the documents on the internet about it and stuff but im still i little bit confused, i dont know what im supposed to do first. Im running an athlon xp2400+ with a 60 gig hard drive made up of 20gig windows 98se, 20gig windows xp and 20 gig of linux. unfortunately i didnt recognise the problem and first and ive already tried 'fixmbr' in the xp recovery console and 'fdisk /mbr' in the windows 98 boot disk. i know that im supposed to get a fc2 recovery cd but i dont know if i have it (is it the disc 4 in the cd set) and i dont know what im supposed to do once i get into the recovery cd; wheather im supposed to try and reinstall grub to the mbr so i can get into fedora to fix the problem using the sfdisk in fedora or if i just use the sfdisk commands off the recovery cd. plz help me people, i just want to get windows and stuff up and running so i can play my games. thnx in advance |
Re: just installed fc2 and windows wont boot anymore
Bit hard to know where to start here... Reading between the lines it sounds like you have clobbered your MBR. when you installed FC2.
Did the fdisk /mbr work? What happens when you boot up? Have you tried booting off a Knoppix CD? IF you can, run fdisk and have a good look at your partition table. |
This is a Fedora Core 2 bug. FC2 didn't play nice with XP in dual boots.
See if this helps: http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedor.../msg00908.html |
the rescue cd is a 5th cd.
I think you can do that from fc2 cd1 also. boot the cd and when u see the prompt type linux rescue and hit enter or something like that. i think under the prompt there is an option thats explains rescue mode (it says something like hit F5). If u use the first cd without rescue mode u 'll get an option to reinstall grub. I'm pretty sure about that. |

Use ure fedora install cd
use option linux rescue.. run fdisk... press p See if your windows partition is set as active.. will have a little * next to it... use the option a set the windows partion to active... write the new partion table.. option w....... Restart computer with xp cd in drive use xp recovery run fixmbr fixboot bootcfg /reconfig (or summin like that) Restart... Windows will load. Linux will be lost. now if i can just figure out how to get linux running ill be happy |
