Java Installation in Fedora 6

Hey Guys:

I've tried several different websites that advertised how to install Java on Fedora 6 but none have worked for me. After becoming very frustrated I thought that perhaps it was the fact that I upgraded my original firefox browser that may be throwing me off. I'm also a gnome user. Since I'm a noobie I have no idea if this makes a difference but I'd appreciate any help on installing java on my system because it's the last step I need to to take before I can download Limewire.

Please see: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=525948

In addition it is a good idea to place the symbolic link in the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory location. If need be create the directory as root;

mkdir /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_09/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ./libjavaplugin_oji.so

Adjust the link line above (ln -s....) to match your actual version location of java.

Thanks a lot for the link, Lenard but I wanted to run this by you. The first set of instructions I used for installing Java had me place the Java folder in the /opt/ directory. Would I have to change anything in your instructions to make this work for me? I followed your directions with no deviation and I got all of the same output that your instructions showed but I didn't download another version of Java. Your instructions didn't tell me to download another version of Java or where to put it so I didn't do any of that. Will I be alright?

Just adjust the instructions to use the actual locations where the java files are, for example;

export JAVA_HOME="/usr/java/jre1.6.0/bin"

becomes;

export JAVA_HOME="/opt/java/jre1.6.0/bin"

The instructions I provided are based on installing the java rpm packages from Sun, but either version will work. one just has to make the adjustments as needed.

There's one problem with this. I'm a noobie and very dumb. Do I need to change the following to reflect the opt directory as well?:

/usr/sbin/alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-gcj /bin/java 1

Excuse me but I just made a mess on my laptop. Could you please tell me exactly what I need to do in order to make this work? I downloaded j2re-1_4_2_14-linux-i586.bin and I extracted it to the opt folder as j2re1.4.2_14. I hate to bother you with this but if you walk me through this I'll do the same for other noobs that ask this same question in the future.

Why did you download and install this old (j2re-1_4_2_14-linux-i586.bin) version of java???

Please visit: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
scroll down to the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1 Download link and get;
Linux RPM in self-extracting file jre-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin

Follow the instructions: http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnote...ml#install-rpm

delete the java directory structure found in /opt then redo the guide, either mine or the one from http://fedorasolved.org/
