in lba mode, which pretty much everything uses, the hard drive addresses are computed by multiplying out the headxcylinder+sector, so really, every sector has a linear value, no matter the CHS, but the partition table references the CHS, and the beginning of partitions need to lined up in a certain way, depending on the way CHS is set up at the time.
so, the first sector on a cylinder doesn't really exist, but changes in reference to the numbers that the partition table is using for CHS.
