Is it okay to alter swap partition with fdisk after FC4 install?
 

Hi. I had already installed FC4 and Win Me on my hard drive when I realized I needed to make my shared partition. I booted the FC4 install disc using "linux rescue," and loaded up fdisk, which I had already used before the install for partitioning. I couldn't use the free space I had left on my hard drive without redoing the extended partition that my swap was on, so I deleted that, created a new extended partition with both the swap and the new, shared, vfat partition. Everything seems fine, but is it okay to alter the swap after FC4 is installed? I'm guessing it is, but I would appreciate a confirmation. :)

It's nothing wrong with changing swap after a installation. There is only one problem: After changing the swap partition, Fedora won't be able to use it unless you specify it's new location. To do that simply edit /etc/fstab.

Unfortunately, now I'm getting this weird error at boot:

Is this because I changed the swap?

Fedora has that stupid idea! Nothing can be changed after the installation or else it will not boot!

Anyway lets try fixing this problem :) . Try booting the first CD and at the boot promt press F5 or enter linux rescue. After the rescue system has booted, try editing the /etc/fstab there. If it doesn't work, just come back here

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply dinolinux! :( My phone line went haywire, and I wasn't able to fix it and connect until today. In diagnosing the problem, I had to reinstall Windows (and therefore Linux), so the the error message is of course not appearing now. I'm sorry for taking your time, but I really appreciated your help anyway. :)

For your future reference, you don't have to re-install linux after installing windows, you simply need to reinstall the linux boot loader, which can be done relatively quickly using your rescue cd.

Thanks for the heads up, geeman! Just in case I run in to that problem again, by rescue CD do you mean typing "linux rescue" at the boot prompt of the FC4 install CD? After that loads, what do I type?
