How does that help resolve this person's problem, is it any of your business?
Maybe the hardware cannot support a newer distribution. Al Jolson is a very old singer who is probably dead now, but there are still people listening to his music, do you know much about nostalgia?.

You should provide more information like the type of network adapter/card, what kind of router, did you compile drivers for it. When you say it worked yesterday, was the Windows box plugged in?, did you surf the net and play pogo or something to verify it works?

Does Al Jolson a use nic with a network module that was maybe not included in a previous distribution? Do you think Al Jolson would know how to compile a new one into the kernel?

*being sarcastic if you couldn't guess*

And you just said "Maybe the hardware cannot support a newer distribution." - therefor ease the headache and install a newer version? I think asking why he was using a antiquated distribution is a valid question.

Yeah I would suggest upgrading, save you some work.

but if you need to get it working quick paste the output of ifconfig, dmesg, and lspci. Lets see whats up.
