internal modem detected not working

Hey
Got a laptop with an internal modem. It's detected by fedora 2 but when I try to dial up on Network Device Control I get error 2, whatever that means. I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to fix it, or even how to find out what exactly is going on ( my knowledge of linux is not profound )
thanks
Adam
