Installing Java plugin - firefox - Fedora Core 2
 

I want to get a java applet to work with firefox. Have tried unsuccessfully in the past to get it to work when I was running Redhat 9. Works fine in Windows.

The applet allows the execution of a crossword puzzle on the askoxford.com website.

When I get to the crossword puzzle page, I get a message ... 'This page contains information of a type (application/x-java-vm) that can only be viewed with the appropriate Plug-in. Click OK to download Plugin.'

When I click 'OK', it invites me to download 'Java 2 Plug-in Version 1.3.' I accept, get a message that the plugin has been successfully installed, but it doesn't work.

I have the Java Runtime Environment (ver 1.4.2) installed in Fedora, and it works fine for other Java applications.

Any suggestions?

I don't remember the exact steps that I took but I found instructions here: http://texturizer.net/firefox/faq.html#q2.2

but had problems with their jre link so I used: http://www.java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp for the download and also found more instructions there.

take note that the example is based on j2re-1_4_2_04 and mozilla 1.6

after ur java is installed

just make sure you link "ln" it to your firefox plugin folder... that should do the trick

btw, i haven try firefox. let us know once you have made it work

Followed those instructions. Have the link in the plugin libraries for both Mozilla and Firefox. The webpage I'm interested in still doesn't work. Could be it has some Windows specific qualities. I'll have to wait until I run across another Java applet to try more.

Aha! Thanks for the prompt response. I went to the link you suggested and got the same error, but the fact that it had worked for you made me think a little more critically. The ln command at the help site defines the path for the link somewhat differently than my own Java installation.

Would have been nice of FC2 to alert me that I was making a link to a nonexistent directory, but it works now, and I am a happy crossword puzzle solver.

whats firefox? I'm using fc2 also but havent got java to work anywhere. I've followed instructions to my best of knowledge... can i ask what broswer and version of java you got working? thanks.

Firefox is a cutdown version of mozilla without all the added extras (no composer, email, chatzilla), but its an ok browser nevertheless. :)

Java wise i have pretty much the same problem, except i abandoned trying to fix it a long time back. I use mozilla 1.8a2, which is the developer version.

ahh thanks for your help guys.. the $Path var is set and it works now.. how come there is no instructions for setting that from java.com??? i followed the instructions a few times and it never said anything about this.. oh well thanks for your link. it help alot.
