installing FC4
 

I bought a computer with a Pentium 2 Processor (350 megahurts), 64 mb of ram, and Nvidia Video Card. It has Windows 98 SE on it. I do not want that on my computer. Will FC4 run on it? I cannot get the computer to boot from the cdrom. I have looked for a way to change that in the Bios settings and did not find anything that would help.:scratch:

no, the computer wont boot from it.

sometimes you can use generic bootprompt options to get your computer to use a generic driver for your motherboards hardware. and example of an option would be "insmod=ide-generic"

but, in general, as the linux kernel evolves it sometimes seems to lose support for older hardware, especially pieces of hardware that dont catch on and become popular.

so, the answer is that there is "a possibility" but you shouldnt expect it to work.

FC4 would work (albeit slowly, and you would not be able to run some programs), but you would need to create a boot floppy to initiate the CD rom to boot. I was able to install Windows XP on several Pentium Pro (read: older than Pentium 2) computers using floppy disks to boot the CDROM. You might get better results, though, by using another distribution. Fedora was not designed to operate on such old hardware (not that it can't, mind you); Slackware or Debian (or even Red Hat 7 or 8) would probably run smoother on your system. If windows can run on it, Linux can blaze through it!

Try using Smart Boot Manager to boot from the CD. A box with those specs will run FC4, but with that amount of RAM you won't be using Gnome or KDE. You could use a lighter desktop such as XFCE, which comes with FC4, IIRC. Or stick more RAM in.

I run FC4 on a PII 333 Mhz box. Since it has the max ram that the bios will handle (384Mb-the extra memory was 10 bucks a stick), it runs Kde and gnome (albeit slowly), but it does amazingly well, considering XP ran slower than molasses on it. It runs better too, if you turn off the fancy stuff (bouncy icons, complex backgrounds).

You may be able to upgrade the BIOS if it is flashable.

Ubuntu runs great on it and is perfect for older machines. It looks nice.
