Installation Root and Welcome Screen Password

I attempted a search but the forums are currently experiencing a problem.

I tried to install FC3 earlier today for the first time. Everything went smooth except at the Welcome Screen I tried to enter my already set password and it denied me. I had just set the password like 10 minutes prior to the Welcome Screen.

I searched other forums for support and found that I should try:
At Grub, press a.
Then add the i to the end of the line.
Then enter passwd

This did not work. I then tried the first CD route:
linux rescue
chroot /mnt/sysimage
passwd

Which also didn't work. I then came upon information about becoming root:
su - then the latter sequence above worked. I was then able to change the password at the command line with success.

I then proceded to reboot and head to the Welcome Screen, again, I was unable to gain access. I also tried the Ctrl-Alt-F2 sequence which did not work.

To sum up, I am able to change the password at the command line, but I am unable to gain access at the Welcome Screen. I realize it's case sensitive and tried a few things related to that. Nothing.

Why can't I gain access? Further, why doesn't it recognize the password that I can change at the command line? Since this is the first install I have nothing on the FC partition that is valuable, should I wipe it and install it again?

Thank you

I think your preferences are set to not allow root logins in graphical mode only in console mode.

You can run "gdmsetup" and enable this feature from the "security" option. Sure, here you have to login as normal user and run the command from console, then you'll be prompted to enter the root password.

I would NOT recommend to login as root in X.

Boby

PS: hope i understood your problem right

I think you understood fine.. however, it is me that doesn't understand..

Ok, are you saying after the first CD
linux rescue
Then F5 ? Is this where I find security?

Where do I run or enter gdmsetup ?

I need step by step instructions.. otherwise I have no idea what you're talking about. sorry.

the above post is correct, it is not allowing graphical logins... you should login as client and su.

If you MUST have a graphical login, ctrl-alt-F1 then init 3 then startx

OK, step-by-step ...
Just boot normally, you come to the login-screen,login as normal user. Then open a console/terminal and type there gdmsetup, a window will appear where you have to enter root's password, enter it. Then a new window will appear, named "Login Screen Setup". On the upper margin there are some options you can choose, click on "Security". Then just enable "Allow root to login with GDM".

That will allow you now to login as root in graphical mode.

Hope this helped, Boby!

I can't login as normal user... I can't log in at all. I boot normally, I get to the login screen, then Im stumped - I can't get any further. So everything from the above italicized and bold quote on doesn't apply as Im not able to even get that far.

Ok, at the welcome screen I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 which took me to the command line login. I tried it without root, then I tried su - and it responded with login incorrect. I also tried su username then the password, which also doesn't work.

Im confused, do you want me to try su init3 ? or su username ? then the password is startx ?

When you're at the command line login, type for user root, then you'll need to enter root's password. After you have loged in type startx.

Ok, please take a look at these screenshots.

Listed as Support Pics Pics

You can see after getting in with root and the password, I then tried startx which fails. I then tried init 3 and at the end of the pics you can see where my system hangs, at Starting anaconda or something like that.. see for yourself. It's only six pics. The last two are of the same shot.

Any suggestions from there?

Thanks

Edit: Im beginning to think I should just killdisk the partition, wait for FC4 and try again.. since it'll be released shortly.. This is getting to be too much work.

you are nearly there... follow these instruction, in this order

at login ctrl-alt-delete

at prompt type

#root
enter password

type

#init 3

some messages will come up, when they end hit enter and at the prompt type

#startx

p.s. if you get the fatal server error just type

#rm /tmp/.X0-lock

the '0' is a zero and remember to typa a capital X

then type

#startx

Hi Jujitsufreak,

I think Boby is assuming you have already created a normal user and wants you to login using this user at the Welcome Screen and then in console type gdmsetup and then enable "Allow root to login with GDM".

If you haven't created a normal user you can do that by using the command adduser <username> and then choose a password and the rest you can keep default

(PS Somebody please confirm if the command is useradd or adduser)

Hope this helps.

It's actually the same:
Code:
man useradd

USERADD(8) USERADD(8)

NAME
useradd - Create a new user or update default new user information
Code:
man adduser

USERADD(8) USERADD(8)

NAME
useradd - Create a new user or update default new user information
Sorry for my previous post, I forgot to mention "init 3" before "startx". My fault! Just follow rkettle instructions.

First make FC3 running, and you can upgrade later
