The distributions probably have no driver for your SATA controller. It is possible, I have faced that situation a few times. Your options are, as long as your installer lets you use external driver disk, to either find a (Linux-compatible) driver for the SATA controller or use some other harddisk. Usually if the installer has a working driver, no error message is shown, so in your case you'll need to find the driver yourself if you wish to continue; check out the website of the manufacturer, send e-mail to them and ask for a driver or instructions, search the web desperately, ...
