Installation hang - help please?
Hello all,
I tried to install Fedora Core 6 on my machine using the Fedora installation DVD. But I got the below message, then machine hangs. This is very early in the installation, like 1-2 seconds after it says loading the linux kernel....... I'm not sure if there's anything printed out before that, but that's all I can see on my monitor. Does any one have any idea what this means? I suspect maybe my BIOS is no good? But I would like to find out exactly what is causing this error. How do I go about getting the source code that was used for the DVD? Maybe I can search that for the message printed out and figure out what's going on. Obviously I'm newbie and knows little to nothing about Linux in general. Any help/suggestion from any one would be much appreciated. Thank you. Quote:

fc 6 install hangs
From a newbie having had fc5/fc6 install problems:
you might try at the initial prompt choice 1): linux text acpi=off or 2): linux acpi=off The first option in particular has worked for me. Wish I understood why! good luck- Marshall |
Thank you for your suggestion. I tried this but unfortunately still doesn't work. Got the exact same message. I guess this does not have anything to do with the ACPI.

I have 2 BIOSes for this board. I can boot with one BIOS, but not the other. I just found out there's some difference in the boot message between the two. The difference I can spot is for the following:
PCI: bridge: 0000:00:13.1 IO window: ... MEM window: ... PREFETCH window: ... Instead of saying all the windows are disabled, with the working BIOS it actually gave some address ranges. Would this have anything to do with why I can't boot on the other BIOS? I assume the 0000:00:13.1 means it's device 13h, function 1? Would someone who's more familiar with the inner working of the kernel be able to give me some clue if this may be the reason why I'm not booting? Thank you. |
