chplat - Welcome to LQ If you look at the bottom of my post, in my sig block, there is a link to my Public Bookmarks. In my Bookmarks are a couple of links to Microsoft's support sites with pages on how to do this.

Can I ask, though, why you want to return to Windows? Anything we can help with?

Which one didn't help? There are at least 2 links in there. In short, delete your partitions with fdisk and run fdisk /mbr to lose the bootloader. Then reinstall Windows.

The best way to get rid of Linux and it's boot loaders, etc and go back to WIndows is as follows:

Get the diagnostic floppy/CD that came with the Hard Drive. If you don't have this, download it from the Hard Drive manufacturer's web site. They have instructions on how to make a bootable floppy or CD from the downloaded files.

Boot into the floppy/CD. In the diagnostic program is usually a utility that writes all ZEROES to the hard drive. The utility usually has an option to write zeroes to the entire disk, or just to the first so many sectors. Writing to the first so many sectors is faster and usually works. If you want to be safe, write zeroes to the entire disk.

Writing zeroes to the entire disk puts it back into the same state as when it was brand new and never been partitioned/formatted.

Now boot into the Windows installation CD, and all should go well for you.

Pudge's solution sounds a little extreme to me.

If you can't get anything else to work, I think there is a rescue cd iso image on the FC3 disks. You could try that. Or, you could download a windows floppy with fdisk on it from bootdisk.com or something.

or use the windows XP install disc to launch recovery console, type fixmbr and something else i cant remember(anyone else know) and then reinstall windows. OR, just reinstall windows, as it is notorious for killing linux distros. Then in windows repartition the Linux partition to NTFS

Go to bootdisk.com and download one for Win 98 SE. Restart your system, put the disk in the computer and start the computer with CDROM support. Then, run fdisk from the M$-DO$ prompt, and delete all the partitions. Then, exit FDISK, and put the fdisk /mbr command. That should get rid of LILO or GRUB. Then, put your M$-WIN CD in the tray, restart the machine and follow the setup instructions.

Dude, get yourself a box and be happy!
