Unhappy Install of FC3 stalls at formatting step

Hi Folks,

Trying to take a (formerly) working RH 8.0 system to F3. I can't get past the format step. It stalls out at the "Formatting / file system ..." point. At the moment, the hourglass is still draining and flipping; a couple of prior attempts ended with it immobile too.

Now, the PC has a couple of SCSI drives with an Adaptec 19160 controller. That model's not listed at all on RH's list of hardware that's known to work, but it worked before....

Thinking there might be something wrong with the drives, I fired up the SCSI Utility you can jump to during boot-up. It happily checked the drives for errors and formatted them. So, nothing obviously wrong there.

So, then I tried hooking up an IDE drive and using that instead--same problem... I've tried the IDE by itself; the SCSI by itself; and both together. Same behavior the little progress bar shows about 10% done--and as nearly as I can tell, it'll sit in that state indefinitely.

I've tried to see if I can hear the heads on the disks, but the rest of the box is loud enough that I can't be sure there's no head movement, but it sure is subtle if it's there.... (And I'd expect these old SCSI's to be plenty loud.)

I've been fighting with this the whole %$#@! day. Suggestions gratefully entertained!

John
